Audio on Paper: The Merits and Pitfalls of the Dutch Digital Media Archive for Studying Transnational Entanglements during the Second World War

Marjet Brolsma is Assistant Professor in European Cultural History at the European Studies department of the University of Amsterdam. She specializes in the cultural and intellectual history of Europe in the 19th and 20th century from a transnational perspective, with a special focus on the intersection of international politics, culture, literature, and identity constructions. She has published on European critiques of liberal modernity, cultural transfer, literary internationalism, propaganda in the First and Second World War, national identity narratives and ideas of Europe. She is co-editor of the volumes Eurocentrism in European History and Memory (2019) and Networks, Narratives and Nations. Transcultural Approaches to Cultural Nationalism in Modern Europe and Beyond (2022). In 2021-2023 she held a research fellowship at the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision in the context of the ‘Media War’ digital history project on propaganda in Dutch-language media during the Second World War.

Vincent Kuitenbrouwer is senior lecturer of History of International Relations at the University of Amsterdam. He is specialized in nineteenth- and twentieth-century imperial history, and has a special interest in colonial media networks. He currently works on Dutch international radio-broadcasting in the late colonial period and the era of decolonization. Between November 2020 and August 2023 he coordinated the project ‘MediaOorlog’ at the Netherlands Institute for Sound & Vision, with financial support of the programme ‘75 Jaar Vrijheid’ of the Mondriaan Fonds.
